Shravan or Sawan month is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar. According to the Hindu belief Shravan is considered the most sanctified month of the year. It is the fifth month of the Hindu calender known as sawan and also known as the first month of Chatur Mas - the four holiest months in Hindu Calendar which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. During the whole month people go to the Shiv temples, worship Lord Shiva, offer flowers and bel leaves, perform Abhishek to the Shiv ling and chant different Mantras related to Lord Shiv. There is tradition of offering holy water of river Sri Ganga Ji on the shiv lingam to attain the ultimate purity of heart and mind in life. The worship of Shiva during Shrawan month is 108 times more powerful than worshipping during normal days. Each day of this month is considered holy and auspicious but Mondays of this month are considered most auspicious so people worship Lord Shiv and keep fast on Mondays. It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva in the month of Shravan brings prosperity and peace in the family.
 
STORY of SHRAVAN : It is believed that Lord Shiva to save the world drank the poison ‘halahala’ that came out during the Samdura Manthan or churning of ocean. Then all the gods offered the water of ganga to cool Lord Shiva and to remove the ill effects of the poison. The main Shravan Puja is the worship of Shivling with Gangajal, belpatra or pure water. Some people observe fast on Mondays. Many people observe different vows during the month like having only vegetarian food, or reading a particular Holy Scripture like Shiv Puran on all days of the month.
 
RUDRABHISHEK : Maha rudrabhishek along with Yagna is performed during the eve of Sawan. Lord Shiva is worshiped in His Rudra form is hailed by all Vedic scriptures as one of the greatest Pujas to remove all evils, to attain all desires and for all round prosperity. Rudrabhisheka is a form of ritual worship in which a Shivalinga is bathed in water which is continuously poured over it, to the accompaniment of the chanting of the vedic mantra called the Rudra Suktha. Abhisheka is the worshipping ritual of the God in which substances like Cow's milk, Ghee, curds, honey, finely ground sugar, sugar cane juice, coconut water, water, rice and similar items, which are believed to be dearer to Shiva are poured on the Shiva Linga.
 
Shivling Puja at Home : Before starting the puja, the devotee takes a bath and wear freshly washed clothes. First puja of Ganesh and Parvati and they should face west towards shiv-lingam. Face of nag towards north direction. Nandi facing east and you sitting behind Nandi.
  • Blows conch or ring bells. This indicates the beginning of the Puja.
  • Do panchamrit abhishek. While pouring the liquid,chant "Om Namah Shivaya" mantra., Mahamrityunjay Mantra or 108 names of lord Shiva.
  • Lingam is cleaned with water from Ganga or normal water.
  • Lingam is smeared with sandalwood paste and is decked with flowers. Water and sandalwood paste is used to keep the lingam cool, as Lord Shiva is always in a highly inflammable state.
  • Offer sweets, coconut and fruits to the Lord.
  • Camphor and incense are lit and ‘arati’ is conducted. 
  • Sing praises of the lord Shiva.
  • Blowing of conch or ringing of bells which indicates the end of Puja.
  • Vibhuti (White ash) is rubbed on the forehead and also distributed.
  • Fruits, sweets and coconut are distributed as ‘prasad.’
